Water and Stone

Difficult things are achieved through effort; impossible things through intelligence.”

The saying is often attributed to Thales of Miletus, the sixth-century BCE Ionian thinker whom many regard as the first philosopher of the Western tradition. The attribution, however, deserves caution. Many sayings from the ancient world have reached us without a direct source that would allow us to establish with certainty who first uttered them.

Yet perhaps the identity of its author matters less than the fact that the saying has endured for twenty-five centuries without losing its power to speak to us. Perhaps this is because it expresses a simple truth that we continue to recognise in our own lives.

To understand it, imagine water meeting stone.

Water can wear away rock without extraordinary force. Its strength lies in persistence. Drop by drop, year after year, century after century, it transforms what once seemed immovable. It does not overcome the stone with a single blow. It changes it because it never ceases to act upon it.

That is effort.

But water has another strategy. When it finds a crack, however narrow, it does not need to keep striking the surface. It enters quietly, following a path where, only moments before, none seemed to exist.

That is intelligence.

To persevere until an obstacle gives way, or to understand it well enough to find another route through it. These are two distinct ways of confronting difficulty, and our society would do well to recover a wiser balance between them.

The science of learning helps us understand the first.

Repeated practice, when undertaken with attention and supported by appropriate feedback, gradually alters the neural circuits involved. Synaptic plasticity, the capacity of connections between neurons to change with experience, allows certain pathways to strengthen. This contributes to greater efficiency in performing learned skills. Sustained practice may also be associated with changes in the myelination of specific neural pathways, helping signals travel faster and with greater coordination.

This is how much of what we call experience is formed.

Someone who masters a musical instrument, a language, a scientific discipline, or a craft does not do so through innate talent alone. Competence is built through thousands of apparently insignificant acts which, accumulated over time, reshape the way the brain processes what it has learned.

Water wears away stone.

But there is another way forward.

In problem-solving, there are moments when further effort brings us no closer to a solution. Then, suddenly, the way we see the problem changes. A relationship that had remained hidden becomes visible. What seemed to be a dead end reveals an unexpected opening.

Cognitive psychology refers to this form of sudden understanding as insight.

It does not necessarily mean thinking more. It means thinking differently. Changing the frame. Questioning an assumption. Looking from another angle. Sometimes an obstacle does not disappear because we have become stronger, but because we realise that we have been trying to overcome it from the wrong direction.

The history of thought had already recognised this distinction.

Aristotle distinguished between technē, practical knowledge acquired through practice, and phronesis, a form of practical wisdom concerned with deliberation and sound judgement about what ought to be done in a particular situation.

One enables us to perfect a skill.

The other helps us decide which skill is worth using.

Our age, however, seems to have elevated effort, understood as sheer quantity, almost to the status of a virtue.

The so-called hustle culture, visible in much contemporary discourse on professional success, has turned constant activity into a badge of worth. Work more. Produce more. Reply faster. Sleep less. Exhaustion can become a sign of commitment, while the number of hours invested is treated as an almost automatic measure of merit.

But being busy does not necessarily mean moving forward.

Research on burnout has documented the consequences of prolonged occupational stress without adequate recovery. The problem is not effort itself. Effort is indispensable. The problem begins when we stop asking whether we are directing it where it can do the most good.

We can spend years striking the same stone.

And there may be a crack only a few inches away.

At the same time, we are living through a technological revolution that is changing the relative value of effort and knowledge.

Artificial intelligence can process, in seconds, quantities of information that would overwhelm any individual mind. Scientific networks allow thousands of researchers to share data, question findings, and build knowledge together. Problems that once demanded vast amounts of accumulated time can now be approached with tools that dramatically extend our cognitive capacities.

This is changing our understanding of intelligence itself.

For centuries, we admired the individual who knew more than anyone else. Today, it is increasingly clear that an essential part of intelligence lies in connecting knowledge, asking meaningful questions, detecting errors, and thinking with others.

Collective intelligence does not diminish individual intelligence.

It amplifies it.

Yet this creates a new responsibility. The more powerful our tools become, the more important it is to know what to ask, how to interpret an answer, and when to question it. Computational speed is not the same as depth of judgement. And having an answer does not mean that we understand the problem.

Perhaps the greatest educational challenge of our time, then, is not to teach children to accumulate ever more information.

It is to teach them how to think when information is increasingly available at their fingertips.

An education based exclusively on repetition can produce disciplined people who are capable of solving familiar problems. Yet the world changes precisely when someone dares to ask a question for which there is still no answer.

We need perseverance, but we also need curiosity.

We need memory, but we also need imagination.

We need to learn how to solve problems, but also how to ask whether we are trying to solve the right problem.

There is, however, a more uncomfortable question that belongs in this reflection.

Not everyone faces the same stone.

Nor does everyone have the same opportunity to discover its cracks.

Where we are born, the quality of the education we receive, the people we encounter, an unexpected conversation, a teacher who awakens a dormant curiosity, or even a seemingly insignificant circumstance can profoundly alter the course of a life.

Chance, too, plays a part in our story.

Recognising this does not diminish the value of effort or intelligence. It simply makes us more cautious when we speak of merit. Not everyone is given the same stone, the same tools with which to work on it, or the same opportunity to notice where its cracks lie.

A truly advanced society should aspire to more than creating opportunities for people to work hard. It should strive to give everyone a genuine opportunity to learn how to look.

Perhaps three lessons follow.

The first is simple. We should not confuse effort with effectiveness. There are times when perseverance is the only answer. There are others when continuing to do the same thing means nothing more than persevering in the wrong direction.

The second concerns artificial intelligence. It does not free us from the need to think. It raises the level of thinking required of us. When a machine can provide an answer in seconds, human value shifts towards the question, the judgement, and the ability to distinguish what is useful from what is merely plausible.

The third may be the most important. Merit needs opportunity in order to reveal itself. A just society cannot guarantee that everyone will reach the same destination. It can, however, strive to ensure that no one is denied the tools needed to discover how far they might go.

Perhaps the saying attributed to Thales contains a deeper lesson than first appears.

It is not a matter of choosing between effort and intelligence.

It is a matter of knowing when each is needed.

Effort teaches us the nature of the stone. Intelligence helps us realise that perhaps we do not need to break through it at all.

And, paradoxically, the two depend upon one another. Someone who has never persevered is unlikely to know an obstacle well enough to understand it. But someone who knows only how to persevere may eventually mistake resistance for progress.

Water has no single strategy.

It strikes when striking is necessary. It seeps through when it finds a crack. It flows around an obstacle when the terrain permits. And when it finds a channel, it follows it.

Perhaps our society needs precisely that kind of flexibility.

To persevere when perseverance is worthwhile.

To stop when pushing harder no longer makes sense.

To change our perspective when the path closes.

And to learn to look at the stone before striking it again.

Because true intelligence does not always lie in finding the strength to overcome an obstacle, but in knowing when to stop fighting it and look for another way.
